Mobile Home Property Value Increases...

mobile home numbers on the move

Mobile homes, or, manufactured homes, have long been considered the preferred choice in terms of affordability. Not only could one attain the comfort and flexibility of owning their own home, but they can do so with lower monthly payments, allowing them to pay off their mobile home in a short amount of time when compared to the years it takes to pay off a standard home.

Cost of Living Rises in Mobile Home Communities

Betty Burnette, a resident of Rocky Brook Mobile Home Park in Carrboro since 1972, moved into the park with a monthly rent of just $35. Now, she pays $290 and claims that the services provided by the mobile home park are nothing like when she first moved in.

The cost of living continues to increase in Chapel Hill and Carrboro along with property value, but, as a result, the number of mobile homes seems to be declining. From 2000 to 2005, Chapel Hill and Carrboro lost 113 mobile homes.

According to Chapel Hill council member Sally Greene, one of Chapel Hill’s top priorities is providing residents with affordable housing options. Despite the increase in property value, Green hopes that mobile home owners open discussions with the landowners to figure out a compromise that will keep cost of living low.

Mobile Park owner Yazmin Romero claims that the rent hasn’t gone up more than $10 or $15 despite the increase in property value. Even if the increase isn’t substantial, it’s enough to create a riff in the number of mobile homes that are present in Orange County. Marie Palmer, another member of the Chapel Hill Town Council wants to make sure that there is enough outreach to help mobile homeowners qualify for assistance.

Our Thoughts

All Weather Roofing believes ownership of a mobile home should be affordable. Renting land with an increased property value may present mobile home owners with financial burdens, but it seems that Orange County and the cities and towns therein are doing everything they can to keep mobile home owners satisfied and free of unnecessary price hikes.

As advocates for affordable living, we believe there is a feesible way of keeping both landowners and mobile homeowners satisfied, and we trust that Orange County will do what it can to prevent the loss of more mobile home communities.

Mobile homes are a wonderful option for anyone looking to save a lot of money when purchasing a home, but like any other home, long-term ownership requires regular maintenance and upkeep. Manufactured homes will experience wear and tear over time, and mobile home roofs will eventually need fixing.

Mobile Home Firefighter Receives Full Face Transplant...

mobile home firefighter receives full face transplant

Firefighters face danger on a weekly basis. Even with protective gear and a team of trained firefighters by their side, there is no guarantee that a firefighter will be kept out of harms way. In the event of a blazing flame, firefighters must risk their well being in order to save potential victims and put out the fire before it spreads.

Patrick Hardison’s Story

Patrick Hardison was a volunteer firefighter from Mississippi. In an unfortunate mobile home fire in 2001, Hardison was searching for fire victims when the burning roof collapsed on top of him.  His helmet was knocked off and his facemask melted rapidly. Hardison held his breath, closed his eyes, and jumped out of a window before the searing fire claimed his life. Unfortunately, Hardison suffered severe burns on his entire face, leaving him without eyelids, ears, lips, and most of his nose.

The 41-year-old firefighter has undergone more than 70 reconstructive surgeries, but skin grafts taken from his legs only left his face with a build-up of scar tissue. The major deformities drew unwanted attention for Hardison, but the brave firefighter was not ready to give up.

The Most Complex Face Transplant in Medical History

Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, chair of the Hansjorg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone, was determined to help Hardison. Rodriguez took over Hardison’s case and immediately began coordinating with the Live ONNY organ recovery organization of New York to look for a donor.

Any organ transplant is a complicated operation; in order for the transplant to take, doctors must find a donor not only with the right blood type, but also a similar height, weight, and age. A facial transplant is even more complex, as the skin color and bone structure also play very important roles in the chance of success. There is a 50% chance the transplant won’t take, as the patient’s immune system can easily recognize foreign skin and its antibodies as invaders. For Hardison, a brave firefighter who was determined to keep trying, anything was worth a shot.

In July of 2015, David Rodebaugh, a bike messenger from Brooklyn, was left brain-dead after an accident in which he was thrown from his bike. Rodebaugh turned out to be a perfect match for Hardison, and with consent from Rodbaugh’s family, Dr. Rodriguez was able to conduct the most complex face transplant in history.

On August 14th, the face transplant took 26 hours and involved more than 100 people. As one team of doctors and nurses carefully removed Rodebaugh’s scalp, eyelids, ears, veins, and forehead tissue, another removed the accumulated scar tissue from Hardison’s face. The removal took 12 hours.

By reconnecting the nerve tissue to that of Hardisons, surgeons were able to give Hardison the ability to blink once more.

The transplant was a complete success. After the swelling went down, Hardison was able to carry on in his normal life. Although the surgery was quite risky, Hardison’s transplant was a stepping-stone in medical transplant history. With the help of immune-system suppressants, Hardison’s body has not rejected the donor and Patrick Hardison now has facial functions that he did not have for the past ten years.

Our Thoughts

Mobile home fires are very real threats to a mobile home owner. In small spaces, fires spread even more rapidly, and the risk of burn and smoke inhalation increases as the fire grows. Although Hardison suffered severe facial burns, we are glad his face transplant surgery was a success. The risks mobile home fires present are very dangerous, and if it weren’t for the courageous efforts of local firefighters, these fires could easily get out of control.

detroit man escapes from mobile home fire small

Detroit Man Escapes Mobile Home Fire...

detroit man escapes from mobile home fire

If you’re a heavy sleeper, the smell of smoke or the bright orange glow of a flame isn’t exactly the most welcoming wake-up call. But Rick Kennedy, a mobile home owner from Detroit, was thankful to have woken up in time to escape a dangerous fire that threatened to engulf his mobile home.

On December 20th, 2015, Kennedy woke up in the middle of the night after he was woken by the smell of thick smoke. Immediately, Kennedy ran to the living room and discovered that the metal pipe above his wooden stove was flaming like a candle. Firefighters from Detroit, Plymouth, and Newport arrived at Kennedy’s home at around 6 a.m. and contained the fire.

Fire Chief Cautions Homeowners

Luckily, Kennedy and his loyal dog Hemi made it out unscathed. The fire destroyed all of Kennedy’s belongings, but Kennedy says he is thankful for the support of the community and his family who have come together to help him in his time of need.

Kennedy tried to put the fire out on his own, but the flames were too big to battle. It is suspected that the fire originated in the wood stove. Fire Chief Don Chute advises mobile homeowners to check their chimneys regularly during the winter to prevent such fires from occurring. Preventive measures ensure safety within your home during all seasons—it’s better to address a minor problem right away before it gets out of control.

The Dangers of a Damaged Mobile Home Roof

In manufactured homes, it is important to treat your home as you would a car—regular maintenance and inspection ensures that your home is free of hazards year-round. Severe weather and normal wear-and-tear can take a toll on a manufactured home, especially on a mobile home roof. Standard aluminum roofing tends to weaken over time. Even with regular maintenance, many mobile home owners are opting for a longer-lasting roof that has been proven to withstand the elements year after year.

The Durable Roof-Over Alternative (TPO)

TPO, a synthetic rubber that is becoming a sought-after option for mobile homeowners looking to replace their roof, is known for its durability, safety, and energy efficiency. TPO is generally more fire resistant than standard mobile home roofing. If your roof is currently in need of repair, consider a roof-over with TPO. Starting fresh with a new roof will save you money in the long run, as a damaged roof will usually need frequent repairs and patch-ups to prevent hazardous leaks and structural collapses.

Our Thoughts

Here at All Weather Roofing, we understand the fire hazards that are all too common in manufactured homes. Like Fire Chief Don Chute stated, we believe preventative measures and regular maintenance are very important for any homeowner to keep up with, and that includes roof inspection and repair if necessary. We are thankful the homeowner and his dog made it out ok, but the tragic loss of his belongings and home goes to show the true power of a household fire.

All Weather Roofing’s Professional Installation for Your New Roof

At All Weather Roofing, our professional contractors have installed roofs for manufactured homes for over 30 years and have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. TPO is a relatively low-cost option for mobile home roofing, and its energy-saving properties will lower your utility bills month after month.

With a lifetime warranty on TPO roof installation there is no risk to you. If you think your roof is ready for repair or replacement, All Weather Roofing conducts free video inspections of your roof so you can determine what action to take. A leaky roof might seem like more of a nuisance than a real problem, but leaks are a telltale sign of damage. Leaky roofs can lead to the growth of black mold, rotting infrastructure that can ultimately lead to a collapse, and increase the risk of electrical fire. For professional repair at an affordable rate, contact All Weather Roofing today by calling us at 1-800-297-3758 or inquire online. We look forward to helping you!

mobile home rescue heros

Two Florida Boys Save the Day When They Help Rescue Five Neighbors From Burning Mobile Home...

To be a hero is an incredible feat. Role models and idols inspire, but a hero has a uniquely brave quality that sets him or her apart from any other. A hero is defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage. A hero is a man or a woman who risks his or her safety for the lives of others.  Bravery and selflessness make a hero.

In Orange County, Florida, two young boys became heroes when a mobile home nearly burned to the ground in late June of this year. Isaiah Francis, 10, and Jeremiah Grimes, 11, faced the flames and smoke to save the small children inside the mobile home.

The two neighborhood boys were doing what any young boys would normally be doing on a sunny afternoon: playing games. Their summer fun was quickly interrupted by an immediate and dire situation. Francis and Grimes were hanging out when Francis remembers smelling something. He looked out the window and saw the black smoke. Francis and Grimes proceeded toward the burning home and saved the kids before the firefighters arrived on scene.

Francis tells reporters he wants to be a firefighter when he’s older and he’s certainly on the right track after courageously facing the fire firsthand. The boy’s courageous efforts may have saved the lives of the young children. Firefighters were able to rescue the other two children, who were sent to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

These two boys may have grown up quite a bit because of this incident, as not many their age would have even considered stepping inside a burning home.

At the end of the day, a mobile home may have been lost in the tragedy, but we’re glad everyone made it out safely thanks to the brave souls of two young boys.

not your average mobile home

Not Your Average Mobile Home...

Let’s face it: houses are expensive. You spend years working, paycheck-to-paycheck to pay for a house you rarely get to enjoy. All that space goes to waste, because by the time you get home from your long, drawling day at work you’re ready to plop on the couch and watch some television or head straight to the sack for some good ol’ shut-eye.

So, your sad house sits in the dark, unused and unloved. The financial strain big houses put on working class Americans has left many to wonder what the point of it all is. It is this very attitude that has spawned the tiny house movement.

What is the tiny house movement, you ask?

Well here’s a picture to give a better idea of what we’re talking about here:

amazing pics of tiny mobile home

Think of everything you actually use in your large house and condense it into a compact, cozy home filled with all the essentials. There you go. You’ve got yourself a tiny mobile home.

On, the outside, it looks like a scaled up storage shed. But on the inside, you find all the essentials such as a tiny kitchen perfect for baking miniature, tiny-home sized pies and casseroles. It’s worked for the hundreds of people joining the movement, so just think small and hold your breath!

So why are these tiny homes so popular? The mobility is convenient, for one. You could literally take your house anywhere and move on a whim if you so choose.  While many of these homes are roughly 500 sq. feet, the utilities and cost of living is unmatched. Many of the young, hip couples are joining the movement because of environmental concerns as well.

This tiny home forces people to live simple, stress-free lives. Rather than crowding your home with unnecessary things, the tiny home gives you the option to let go of extravagance and opt for necessity instead.

You’ve got your toilet. Your kitchen. Your bed. Your chairs. Your desk. Everything you need, just closer together.

And while we don’t build or specialize in tiny roofs or tiny homes, let’s not forget the importance of having a great roof over your head, either.  Mobile home roofing is our specialty. Whether you’re living big, or living, really, really small, we’ve got you covered. Literally. If you’re interested in getting a new moible home roof, whether you’re ready to join the tiny house movement or not, give us a call at 1.800.297.3758 or contact us online today. We can’t wait to hear from you!

mobile home residents fear evictions Palmetto mobile park

Florida Mobile Home Parks Threatens to Evict Elderly Residents For Accepting Food Donations...

The owner allegedly had her employees follow delivery trucks to keep track of which mobile homes were receiving free food.

The elderly have worked hard their whole life. Living paycheck-to-paycheck off social security is not a comfortable situation. As such, many residents started wondering why anyone would deprive the elderly residents of their right to utilize these programs? Well, the managers at Carlyn Estates do not seem to abide by the “respect your elders” rule.

Senior resident Pearl Jones is 81 years old and has been a resident at the park for more than 30 years. Not only has she been a dedicated resident for a few decades, she has come to know this community as her home. Because of the threatening letter she received from the landlord, Jones no longer accepts food donations in the park.

She comments on the situation, “This lady is from California and she said no one in her needs it…She thinks everyone in here has a lot of money. Well, I need it.” Jones receives a monthly income of $883 from Social Security. With rent just above $400, and $137 for utilities, it’s easy to see why these donation services can make a world of difference from a financial standpoint.

Yet, the threatening letters made their way into more than a few sets of hands at the park. With the fear of eviction constricting their freedom of speech, many residents refused to appear on camera to comment on the situation.

Discrimination comes in many forms, and at this mobile home park, it seems like it’s the poorer residents who are being targeted. The residents are planning to go to court on the issue. With the exception of a few, most residents would like for the programs to continue.

Our Thoughts

We think mobile home owners deserve a long-lasting home and an accepting mobile home community. Everyone has the right to live comfortably in his or her home and in the surrounding neighborhood.

TPO vs PVC Membranes...

The joys of having a roof over your head are nearly endless. When it rains, you stay dry.  When it’s hot, you have shade. When there’s a plane soaring loudly in the sky, you have a barrier giving you peace and quiet.  However, there comes a time when your roof has had enough. Nothing lasts forever and mobile home roofing is no exception.

What’s Over Your Head?

The joys of having a roof over your head are nearly endless. When it rains, you stay dry.  When it’s hot, you have shade. When there’s a plane soaring loudly in the sky, you have a barrier giving you peace and quiet.  However, there comes a time when your roof has had enough. Nothing lasts forever and mobile home roofing is no exception. The sun, wind, and rain and a concoction of nature’s other surprises will eventually huff and puff just enough to cause damage to your roof.

When the time comes to replace your mobile home roof/ TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin), is the way to go. TPO is a roofing material that has had repeated success withstanding the elements.  Not only is it cost-efficient compared to other roofing options, it is UV and heat resistant, energy efficient, durable, and it comes in various styles to suit the needs of the home and the homeowner. Find out why TPO is the number one commercial roofing material today and how is saves money on energy costs.

What is TPO, Exactly?

TPO, the acronym for the full-length tongue twister is Thermoplastic Polyolefin, is a heat resistant blend of plastic, rubber, and filler material (usually composed of fiberglass, talc, etc.). This single-ply roofing material grew in popularity because it is reliable and long-lasting.  Let’s glance over TPO’s history to see why it is one of the most sought-after roofing material to date and extremely popular for mobile home roofing.

The History of TPO

TPO started years after its predecessor PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in Europe during the 1970’s.  PVC, best known for its versatility, is the third-most widely used plastic polymer blend in current times.  Both TPO and PVC are thermoplastics, meaning they can transform and mold at a certain temperature but solidify once cooled off.  PVC became the industry standard for contractors and commercial architects everywhere in the 1960’s when it was realized that the material could withstand chemical, light, and temperature corrosion.

As science and technology advanced, so did the understanding of environmental hazards and the effects PVC has on the global effort to “Go Green”. PVC roofing membranes are made up of plasticizers which are substances used to improve the plasticity and strength of whichever material it is added to.

At first, plasticizers were a positive thing. They gave PVC flexibility, but the long-term effects soon outweighed the short-term benefits. After many years, the plasticizers would break down and wash away.  Not only does this process add hazardous chemicals to the soil, it weakens your roof and increases the risk of leakage ad cracking.

TPO formulas over the years have corrected the problems PVC membranes have, and now the TPO material is near perfect with its plasticizer-free chemical structure.  TPO doesn’t break down as easily as PVC and it is safer for the environment. Although TPO has a shorter history, the roofing material has gained popularity because it is just as moldable and durable as any unnecessary additives and the risks and problems PVC carries.

Out with PVC; in with TPO!

PVC is slowly becoming a roofing material of the past because it is an older and more expensive way to protect your home than TPO. TPO is now widely-used material for good reason; it’s a reasonably priced and dependable. TPO is also known for its environmental benefits.  TPO is a light-colored, reflective material that bounces UV rays away from the home and leaves the inside of the house feeling cool and comfortable.  Plasticizers in PVC attract mold and cause the once-lightly colored material to darken, reducing energy efficiency and absorption.  You can worry less about your AC bill when a TPO roof is installed.

TPO Your Roof in Style

Yes, exterior decoration is just as important interior decoration.  Your roof should “fit in” with the rest of your home and still be an affordable, environmentally friendly, and energy efficient roofing option.

White roofs are a sure sign of an energy-efficient home.  Now, it doesn’t have to be that way. TPO roofs come in more than just one color to suit your preference.  White, Light gray, tan and even reflective black are colors that can be used in TPO installation. With more color options available, you can make sure mobile home stays cool inside and out.

Durability

Compared to the rest, TPO is the closest thing to a reliable roofing superhero. Not only does TPO fight mold growth, it deters tears, cracks, dirt, and punctures. It’s resilience to weather comes from its chemical structure.  Plasticizers found in PVC roofs wither away with change in weather, causing the roof to shrink and crack. Depending on how serious the situation is, what could have been a patch job has now turned into a whole new roof installation.

When it comes to deciding what material you can trust to put above your head, make TPO your top choice. It’s new and improved, tried and true and will save you money from the get-go.  Now that you know a little more about the history of TP0, its energy efficiency, environmental effects, cost-efficiency, and overall durability, maybe you will accompany the many who are now enjoying the benefits of TPO roofing.

TPO Membrane Roofing...

TPO Membrane roofing is one of the best choices for mobile home roofs and All Weather Roofing has been installing TPO membrane roofs since 1984.

TPO membrane roofing has quickly become one of the most popular options in roofing materials.

TPO stands for thermoplastic polyofin and it actually is a name that covers a variety of different materials that feature polypropylene and propylene diene monomer. As you will see, there are many advantages to TPO, which make it an ideal option for many different roofing situations.

Why Is TPO Used in Mobile Home Roof Overs?

TPO is especially useful for roof overs because it does have such an energy-efficient quality. Mobile homes often have a very low level of energy efficiency, and making this one roofing change can be enough to enjoy large savings on energy bills. Additionally, due to the different widths in the material, TPO is also very easy to install on mobile homes of any size. Since the material is so dependable against a variety of different types of environmental damage, it will likely last the whole life of the mobile home.

Why Should You Consider a TPO Membrane Roof?

TPO offers a low-cost installation and easy repair, which means not spending as much money for the whole life of the roof. Additionally, since this is an energy-efficient option, it will provide even more savings when it doesn’t take as much to cool the property.

What Are the Properties of TPO?

To begin with, you need to consider the properties of TPO, as in what it has to offer when it is used for a roofing material. So, let’s look at what you would be getting if you chose this for your roofing option.

  • It is a white material, which means it will work to reflect sunlight away from the building. In fact, TPO will reflect about 78% of the energy from the sun’s rays.
  • TPO is extremely durable and is resistant to fire, V rays, pollutants, and bacteria.
  • The material does not contain chlorine, which means it will not harm the environment.
  • It is a fairly low-cost option, which is ideal in many roofing situations.
  • TPO comes in different widths, including eight, ten, and twelve foot. This way, with fewer seams, the labor cost of installing it will be much lower than other materials.
  • This material offers a thicker top ply, which is ideal in a roofing material.
  • This lightweight material works to keep moisture out and can work in almost any environment, which means it can be used in retrofitting projects as well as new builds.
  • TPO remains flexible whether it is hot or cold outside, and that means there will not be a risk of cracking.
  • Finally, the membrane is easy to repair, meaning it can last for a long time while remaining new in appearance.

For most people, the advantage of TPO would be the lower cost, but as you can see, this is only one of the properties to consider.
