Cost of Living Rises in Mobile Home Communities

Betty Burnette, a resident of Rocky Brook Mobile Home Park in Carrboro since 1972, moved into the park with a monthly rent of just $35. Now, she pays $290 and claims that the services provided by the mobile home park are nothing like when she first moved in.

The cost of living continues to increase in Chapel Hill and Carrboro along with property value, but, as a result, the number of mobile homes seems to be declining. From 2000 to 2005, Chapel Hill and Carrboro lost 113 mobile homes.

According to Chapel Hill council member Sally Greene, one of Chapel Hill’s top priorities is providing residents with affordable housing options. Despite the increase in property value, Green hopes that mobile home owners open discussions with the landowners to figure out a compromise that will keep cost of living low.

Mobile Park owner Yazmin Romero claims that the rent hasn’t gone up more than $10 or $15 despite the increase in property value. Even if the increase isn’t substantial, it’s enough to create a riff in the number of mobile homes that are present in Orange County. Marie Palmer, another member of the Chapel Hill Town Council wants to make sure that there is enough outreach to help mobile homeowners qualify for assistance.

Mobile Home Firefighter Receives Full Face Transplant...

Firefighters face danger on a weekly basis. Even with protective gear and a team of trained firefighters by their side, there is no guarantee that a firefighter will be kept out of harms way. In the event of a blazing flame, firefighters must risk their well being in order to save potential victims and put out the fire before it spreads.

Patrick Hardison’s Story

Patrick Hardison was a volunteer firefighter from Mississippi. In an unfortunate mobile home fire in 2001, Hardison was searching for fire victims when the burning roof collapsed on top of him.  His helmet was knocked off and his facemask melted rapidly. Hardison held his breath, closed his eyes, and jumped out of a window before the searing fire claimed his life. Unfortunately, Hardison suffered severe burns on his entire face, leaving him without eyelids, ears, lips, and most of his nose.

The 41-year-old firefighter has undergone more than 70 reconstructive surgeries, but skin grafts taken from his legs only left his face with a build-up of scar tissue. The major deformities drew unwanted attention for Hardison, but the brave firefighter was not ready to give up.

The Most Complex Face Transplant in Medical History

Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, chair of the Hansjorg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone, was determined to help Hardison. Rodriguez took over Hardison’s case and immediately began coordinating with the Live ONNY organ recovery organization of New York to look for a donor.

Any organ transplant is a complicated operation; in order for the transplant to take, doctors must find a donor not only with the right blood type, but also a similar height, weight, and age. A facial transplant is even more complex, as the skin color and bone structure also play very important roles in the chance of success. There is a 50% chance the transplant won’t take, as the patient’s immune system can easily recognize foreign skin and its antibodies as invaders. For Hardison, a brave firefighter who was determined to keep trying, anything was worth a shot.

In July of 2015, David Rodebaugh, a bike messenger from Brooklyn, was left brain-dead after an accident in which he was thrown from his bike. Rodebaugh turned out to be a perfect match for Hardison, and with consent from Rodbaugh’s family, Dr. Rodriguez was able to conduct the most complex face transplant in history.

On August 14th, the face transplant took 26 hours and involved more than 100 people. As one team of doctors and nurses carefully removed Rodebaugh’s scalp, eyelids, ears, veins, and forehead tissue, another removed the accumulated scar tissue from Hardison’s face. The removal took 12 hours.

By reconnecting the nerve tissue to that of Hardisons, surgeons were able to give Hardison the ability to blink once more.

The transplant was a complete success. After the swelling went down, Hardison was able to carry on in his normal life. Although the surgery was quite risky, Hardison’s transplant was a stepping-stone in medical transplant history. With the help of immune-system suppressants, Hardison’s body has not rejected the donor and Patrick Hardison now has facial functions that he did not have for the past ten years.

Detroit Man Escapes Mobile Home Fire...

If you’re a heavy sleeper, the smell of smoke or the bright orange glow of a flame isn’t exactly the most welcoming wake-up call. But Rick Kennedy, a mobile home owner from Detroit, was thankful to have woken up in time to escape a dangerous fire that threatened to engulf his mobile home.

On December 20th, 2015, Kennedy woke up in the middle of the night after he was woken by the smell of thick smoke. Immediately, Kennedy ran to the living room and discovered that the metal pipe above his wooden stove was flaming like a candle. Firefighters from Detroit, Plymouth, and Newport arrived at Kennedy’s home at around 6 a.m. and contained the fire.

Fire Chief Cautions Homeowners

Luckily, Kennedy and his loyal dog Hemi made it out unscathed. The fire destroyed all of Kennedy’s belongings, but Kennedy says he is thankful for the support of the community and his family who have come together to help him in his time of need.

Kennedy tried to put the fire out on his own, but the flames were too big to battle. It is suspected that the fire originated in the wood stove. Fire Chief Don Chute advises mobile homeowners to check their chimneys regularly during the winter to prevent such fires from occurring. Preventive measures ensure safety within your home during all seasons—it’s better to address a minor problem right away before it gets out of control.

Two Florida Boys Save the Day When They Help Rescue Five Neighbors From Burning Mobile Home...

To be a hero is an incredible feat. Role models and idols inspire, but a hero has a uniquely brave quality that sets him or her apart from any other. A hero is defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage. A hero is a man or a woman who risks his or her safety for the lives of others.  Bravery and selflessness make a hero.

In Orange County, Florida, two young boys became heroes when a mobile home nearly burned to the ground in late June of this year. Isaiah Francis, 10, and Jeremiah Grimes, 11, faced the flames and smoke to save the small children inside the mobile home.

The two neighborhood boys were doing what any young boys would normally be doing on a sunny afternoon: playing games. Their summer fun was quickly interrupted by an immediate and dire situation. Francis and Grimes were hanging out when Francis remembers smelling something. He looked out the window and saw the black smoke. Francis and Grimes proceeded toward the burning home and saved the kids before the firefighters arrived on scene.

Francis tells reporters he wants to be a firefighter when he’s older and he’s certainly on the right track after courageously facing the fire firsthand. The boy’s courageous efforts may have saved the lives of the young children. Firefighters were able to rescue the other two children, who were sent to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

These two boys may have grown up quite a bit because of this incident, as not many their age would have even considered stepping inside a burning home.

At the end of the day, a mobile home may have been lost in the tragedy, but we’re glad everyone made it out safely thanks to the brave souls of two young boys.

Florida Mobile Home Parks Threatens to Evict Elderly Residents For Accepting Food Donations...

The owner allegedly had her employees follow delivery trucks to keep track of which mobile homes were receiving free food.

The elderly have worked hard their whole life. Living paycheck-to-paycheck off social security is not a comfortable situation. As such, many residents started wondering why anyone would deprive the elderly residents of their right to utilize these programs? Well, the managers at Carlyn Estates do not seem to abide by the “respect your elders” rule.

Senior resident Pearl Jones is 81 years old and has been a resident at the park for more than 30 years. Not only has she been a dedicated resident for a few decades, she has come to know this community as her home. Because of the threatening letter she received from the landlord, Jones no longer accepts food donations in the park.

She comments on the situation, “This lady is from California and she said no one in her needs it…She thinks everyone in here has a lot of money. Well, I need it.” Jones receives a monthly income of $883 from Social Security. With rent just above $400, and $137 for utilities, it’s easy to see why these donation services can make a world of difference from a financial standpoint.

Yet, the threatening letters made their way into more than a few sets of hands at the park. With the fear of eviction constricting their freedom of speech, many residents refused to appear on camera to comment on the situation.

Discrimination comes in many forms, and at this mobile home park, it seems like it’s the poorer residents who are being targeted. The residents are planning to go to court on the issue. With the exception of a few, most residents would like for the programs to continue.
